Hinduism as kitsch
It's a trend, and it's been a trend: walking up Broadway in Manhattan today, I noticed a clothing store had flypapered its walls with colored reproductions of a Hindu sadhu deep in meditation. The storefront had transparent black and white reproductions of princesses and rajas, which is fair game; backhanded-exoticism-compliment though it may be, this is incredibly insensitive.
I bet a lot of the more obscure references are actually done by desi NYU art students.
Perhaps I should put up a store next door and cover the walls with Pat Robertson, crosses and braziers and see whether anyone gets the joke.
